Another form of photography that has come on leaps and bounds thanks to the digital revolution. Before always the bastion of the single pose and cardboard frame, school photography has moved into a new age with photographers such as Daryl Burton of Class Photos leading the way - www.class-photos.co.uk
Again with the development of technology comes the need to make sure that the insurance you have bought is covering you correctly.
Kit should be insured for going on location. Unlike other forms where there may be the odd occasion to travel outside of the UK, the school photographers market does tend to be confined to the UK. Similarly though, if any school photographers are taking dyesub printers, backdrops, lights or other props to locations they need to ensure that the sum insured is correct and these are covered.
This is going to be one that will be required for any photographer wishing to be involved in this form of photography. Schools will be insistent that photographers carry a certain level and this could be a slow as £1m and as high as £5m dependant on the type of school and area of the country you are wishing to market yourself in. Along with an up to date CRB check (Criminal Records Bureau) these two are essential from the school’s side of the fence if they are to consider you for any work there. Failure to have one or both could see you fail as a school photographer.
With more and more events being added to the remit of an event photographer (prom do’s, corporate events, charity days etc) so the need for a successful event photographer to spread themselves develops. This generally entails the employment of staff either on a full time, part time, casual or one off basis. Whether paid well, or they work for free, they will need to be covered under Employers Liability as they will be working under your direction.
This is not the costliest of covers (unless you have a large number of staff) and provides one of the largest levels of cover as statute under UK law
However, trade without it and you could find that all you have worked for gone in the blink of an eye if someone who may have only been working one day for you for £40 had an accident and sued you because you didn’t have the cover. Can you afford to not have it if you do use any sort of help?
